Charlotte, Life? or Theater?

The Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra, in association with the Museum of Jewish Heritage, is proud to present a free concert performance of “Charlotte: Life? or Theater?,” book and lyrics by Elise Thoron and music by Gary S. Fagin, a one-act music-theater work based on the life and art of Charlotte Salomon, the German-Jewish painter who created an astonishing visual record of her life in Berlin and France in the 1930s and 1940s and who lost her life in Auschwitz in 1943.

This special presentation, by a company of eight actors and an ensemble of KCO musicians, accompanied by projections of Charlotte’s remarkable art, will take place at the Museum of Jewish Heritage’s Safra Hall, 36 Battery Place, 5:00pm Sunday, May 31.

Charlotte Salomon created a uniquely personal and enduring work in the face of daunting suppression; her astonishing series of over 1,000 gouaches (click here to view) is an inspiration not only for everyone involved in the creative arts, but for all of us in these challenging times.

Join us on May 31 for what will be a very special, memorable musical-dramatic event celebrating the inspiring power of Life and Theater!

The presentation of “Charlotte: Life? or Theater?" is made possible by a generous grant from the Oldenburg/Van Bruggen Foundation.
